Corrections Chairperson

CORRECTONS CHAIR POSITION

PURPOSE: The purpose of a corrections committee is to coordinate the work of individual A.A. members and groups who are interested in carrying our message of recovery to alcoholics behind the walls, and to set up means of smoothing the way from the facility to the larger A.A. community through pre-release contacts.  The 3 pillars of Corrections are 1. Inside Meetings, 2. Letters (CCS), and 3. Pre-Release Program

Qualifications:

  • Be elected by District 43.
  • Minimum 1-3 years of sobriety with understanding of the Twelve Traditions.
  • Past service experience helpful, (GSR, Alternate to the Chair, etc.)
  • Be a Servant Leader
  • Use Corrections workbook provided by General Service Office as a guideline for corrections service work
  • Be willing to put your own personality into the committee while following the principles of AA (Have Fun)
  • Be willing to carry the message inside, but not necessary if unable to do so
  • Need to be organized

Strategic Work

  • Chair monthly Corrections committee meeting – 2nd Thursday of every month, 7pm on Zoom
  • Prepare Agenda & run meeting with group involvement
  • Study one tradition per meeting
  • Read Corrections literature and books
  • Attend monthly District meeting and present Corrections Activities (two-minute or less)
  • Educate Groups & GSR’S of importance of Corrections 12 Step work
  • Work with other Committees to highlight corrections (If possible)
  • Attend John Howard Society with Area Corrections Chair (If possible)
  • Attend quarterlies and assemblies & participate in Corrections breakout sessions (if possible)
  • Attend International and Local corrections activities/meetings (if possible)
  • Set up table/booth on corrections whenever invited to do so & find opportunities to do so
  • Work with your committee to create awareness thru workshops, speaker meetings, etc. (Corrections Corner)
  • Support fellow committee members to become future AA leaders
  • Work closely with Alternate Corrections chair to prepare them for stepping up at rotation

Tactical Work

  • Collect and distribute Corrections literature for (Inside Members & Outside Volunteers)
  • Know Inside Meeting Opportunities within driving distance of District 43
  • Know the 3 Pillars of corrections – Meetings, Writing letters, Pre-Release program
  • Distribute/Delegate committee work as much as possible (Literature, Secretary, etc.)
  • Make your group feel part of
  • Submit Newsletter Report by 15th of each month
  • Create Budget and keep track of money spent (keep/submit receipts)
  • Be Creative in generating corrections awareness (luncheons, Greet and Meet, Speaker Meetings, etc.)
  • Attend individual Group Business meetings whenever requested
  • Remind GSR’S to Create a Corrections Position for their Groups
  • Respond to email and phone calls promptly
  • Create a good relationship with your DCM
  • Register your position with DCM (to be registered with Area 79 & General Service Office)
  • Keep track of Volunteers, Contributions, Group & Individual involvement/donations (USB from previous Chair)
  • Share/Save your work and pass it on to next Chair on USB

Time Commitment:   Approximately 6.5 hrs to 15 hrs per month
